Good Friday Candle Liturgy


One:   “For God so loved the world as to give the only begotten one…” (John 3:16)
Two:   For the times we have not shared your love…
All:     Forgive us, God of Love.
Extinguish one candle

One:    Jesus said to him, ‘Judas, is it with a kiss that you are betraying the Chosen One?’ (Luke 22:48)
Two:   For the times we have betrayed your commandment to love one another…
All:     Forgive us, God of Faithfulness.
Extinguish one candle

One:   Then Peter remembered Jesus saying, “before a rooster crows today, you’ll deny me tree times.” Peter went out and wept bitterly. (Luke 22:61-62)
Two:   For the times we have turned our backs on you…
All:     Forgive us, God of Open Arms.
Extinguish one candle

One:    Now the ones who were holding Jesus began to mock him and beat him.
(Luke 23:64)
Two:   For the times we have mocked and hurt your children…
All:     Forgive us, God of Humility.
Extinguish one candle

One:   When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. Then Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.’ (Luke 23:33-34)
Two:   For the times we have not offered our own forgiveness as freely as you do…
All:     Forgive us, God of Liberation.
Extinguish one candle

One:    And when all the crowds who had gathered there for this spectacle saw what had taken place, they returned home, beating their breasts. (Luke 23:48)
Two:   For the times we did not put our trust in your word…
All:     Forgive us, God of Certainty.
Extinguish one candle
